How It Works

The process of calling Crimestoppers is simple. You call 822-1111 or 1-877-903-STOP, which puts you in contact with the Crimestoppers command center. An operator will answer the phone and take down the information you wish to provide about a crime. He or she will never ask for your name, number, address, or any other identifying information. You can also place a tip on our website from the tip submit button on the main page or you can download our CrimestoppersGNO "free" app for smartphones.

Once you give us information, you will be assigned a code number and password, which is the only method Crimestoppers has of identifying you. You must remember this number, and provide it to a Crimestoppers operator when you call back to check on the status of the information you have given. You must call Crimestoppers. We cannot call you, because we never ask for your phone number. You can check the status of your tip, add information, upload video or photos by going to www.P3tips.com.

In the meantime, we pass your anonymous information onto the appropriate law enforcement agency, which takes action based on your information and reports back to us on whether it led to the solving or prevention of a crime.

To check on the status of your Greater New Orleans area tip, call 504 837-8477 and give us your code number, we check with law enforcement to see whether your information was useful. If it was, you receive a cash reward.

To receive that reward, we instruct you to go to a designated bank at a specified location on a certain date to pick up your reward. Rewards are paid out in cash, no matter what the amount.

Crimestoppers pays a reward of up to $2,500 (up to $5,000 on homicides) on all felony crimes committed in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Plaquemines and Washington Parishes. On occasion depending on case specifics, such as multiple victims or a case involving a child, a reward may be increased by the Crimestoppers Board of Directors up to $5,000.  Any mention of the Crimestoppers reward must be done through Crimestoppers, unless approved in writing by the organization. Crimestoppers has given permission to their partner law enforcement agencies to include our tagline on all media alerts sent out by law enforcement when reporting a felony incident. Our tagline reads: "Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or 1 (877) 903-STOP. Callers do not have to give their name or testify to be eligible for the up to $2,500 reward or up to $5,000 in the incident of a homicide.  "Caller MUST contact Crimestoppers directly." Unless stated otherwise, a reward will expire two years from the date of the felony crime.

A reward will be paid once the investigating law enforcement agency supplies Crimestoppers written verification that a tip helped lead to the arrest of a suspect. Rewards can be split on any given case depending on the information provided and law enforcement's disposition of all tips received. Rewards are paid out in cash using case specific Tip number maintaining the anonymity of the tipster.  A tipster is never identified through out our process. The authorized reward will remain open for two years starting from the receipt of the tip disposition by Crimestoppers.

Supplemental Rewards
Crimestoppers offers a standard reward of up to $2,500 (up to $5,000 on homicide) on all felony crimes committed in our nine-parish area. Additional reward money is sometimes added to our Crimestoppers reward by individuals. These are called Supplemental Rewards. When an individual decides to add to the Crimestoppers reward, a Supplemental Reward contract is completed between Crimestoppers and the individual. The additional money is set aside to be used for that specific crime. Crimestoppers will promote the increased reward to the media to increase awareness of the crime.

Anonymity
The promise of anonymity for callers is Crimestoppers most powerful weapon in the fight against crime. We do not have caller ID. We do not use *67. We do not record phone calls. Not ever. Information given to Crimestoppers is protected under Louisiana’s Privileged Information statue R.S. 15. 477.1
