What positions has this officer/deputy held within your agency? 

Throughout his career with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Sierra has served in the Corrections Division, Traffic Division, and Court Security. He also served as assistant to former Sheriff Jack Stephens. 

He is currently assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau, where he continues to demonstrate leadership and a strong commitment to public safety. 

Under the specific qualifications cited, what has this officer/deputy done that merits nomination? 

As a detective with the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Sgt. Sierra has helped resolve the majority of his assigned cases through thorough interviews and careful evidence review. His attention to detail and professionalism ensure investigations are handled properly and with integrity. 

Beyond his investigative duties, Sgt. Sierra dedicates significant off-duty time to his community. He spends countless hours supporting Chalmette High School’s band program, participating in autism awareness fundraisers with the St. Bernard Autism Awareness Krewe, assisting with the St. Bernard School System’s Special Olympics, and contributing to the Cops for Christmas initiative.

Is there a specific event that stands out demonstrating how this officer/deputy has gone above and beyond? 

What stands out most is Sgt. Sierra’s ability to manage a demanding caseload while maintaining professionalism and compassion. Over the past year, he has worked 104 criminal investigations, each requiring detailed interviews, evidence review, and coordination with prosecutors. 

Despite the volume and complexity of these cases, he gives every investigation the attention it deserves, keeps victims informed, and ensures cases are thoroughly prepared for prosecution. Consistently maintaining that level of quality and accountability reflects a work ethic that goes well beyond expectations. 

How is this officer/deputy described by their peers? 

Sgt. Sierra is described as dependable, professional, and highly respected. He is known for his integrity, steady leadership, and willingness to assist others. With more than three decades of service, he is viewed as a mentor who genuinely cares about his colleagues and the community.
